The American emphasis of individual encourages ideals of personal freedom and creative thought, but it also generates more selfishness. The worldwide legal and orthodox systems do not rely on such an idealistic concept of morality as was advocated, but rather utilize external factors, i.e. punishment, as the motivation for behaving well. In daily life, resources that could be devoted to secular traditions and rituals are often used for immediate and material benefits instead. The concept of benefit should not be translated into selfishness after all. They advocate benefit for the collective, not the individual. All in all, while one gingerly skirted the subject of human nature altogether, the other seems to be missing something entirely, and entirely blinded by profit.
